Car 2 Home Project: A Decade of Empowering Lives Through Hope and Support

Outstanding Community Organisation

In 2012, a group of dedicated volunteers from Hunter Homeless Connect approached Macquarie Life Church with a vision. To provide safe spaces and essential services for people experiencing homelessness and rough sleeping in their cars. Inspired by successful car park programs in the United States, the initiative began despite initial challenges, including scepticism from within the church itself.

However, the church ultimately embraced the project, driven by a powerful ethos: “If the community has approached us for support in this area of homelessness, and we cannot help, then we really can’t call ourselves a church.” With community backing and support from Lake Macquarie City Council, the project, now known as Car 2 Home, was launched as a trial. Over ten years later, it has become a force in the region, impacting thousands of lives.

Providing More Than Shelter

At its core, the Car 2 Home Project offers more than just a safe place to park. Participants gain access to vital amenities such as bathrooms, kitchens, laundry facilities, and even accommodations for their pets, a rare and compassionate feature. Yet, the project’s ultimate goal extends far beyond temporary relief.

By working closely with individuals and families, Car 2 Home provides personalised casework aimed at securing long-term, sustainable housing. This client-centred approach addresses the root causes of homelessness, ensuring that participants have the tools and support they need to break free from cycles of poverty and instability.

A Unique and Inclusive Service

The Car 2 Home Project is distinct in its national scope and commitment to inclusivity. Men, women, children, families, and pets from all walks of life are welcomed and supported. The only requirement is adherence to a code of conduct that fosters respect and safety for all.

Staying connected with service users is a priority, achieved through dedicated caseworkers and ongoing community engagement. These efforts ensure that every guest feels seen, heard, and valued, laying the foundation for trust and progress.

Tackling Challenges with Innovation

Despite its successes, the project has faced significant challenges, particularly in addressing the shortage of safe and affordable housing. Social housing, often the most viable option, remains out of reach for many due to decade-long waitlists.

In response, Car 2 Home formed a partnership with Enlarge Living, securing ethical private investments to create transitional housing solutions. Currently managing seven properties, the project aims to expand to 20 within the next three years, supported by caseworkers and a multidisciplinary team.

This team includes professionals specialising in mental health, human rights, tenancy law, and property management, ensuring a holistic approach to addressing homelessness.

Milestones and Future Vision

Since its inception, Car 2 Home has supported over 1,000 individuals, families and pets, creating tailored pathways out of homelessness. The project’s future ambitions include building an emergency accommodation centre for older women at risk of homelessness in Toronto and expanding its property portfolio to meet growing demand.

To achieve these goals, Car 2 Home is seeking increased private and government investment, recognising that additional resources will enable the organisation to extend its reach and impact.

Empowering Community and Culture

Car 2 Home is guided by the mission of Macquarie Care: “Empowering our community through the extended hand of hope.” This faith-based philosophy underpins every aspect of the project, from its inclusive service delivery to its unwavering commitment to uplifting the most vulnerable.

Volunteers and employees are essential to the project’s success, fostering an environment of safety, compassion, and empowerment. Through this supportive culture, Car 2 Home helps participants improve their physical and mental health, reconnect with loved ones, and achieve stability in their lives.

Stories of Transformation

One story that encapsulates the project’s impact is that of David K, a young man working hard but unable to sustain private rental housing. Living in his car during summer, David faced nightly mosquito infestations that made sleep nearly impossible.

Through Car 2 Home’s partnership with Enlarge Living, David moved into a subsidised rental. Reflecting on his first night in his new home, he shared: “No mozzies! It was great. I had the fan on all night and slept like a baby. It’s so nice to have somewhere to cook and watch TV in my own space, so yes, it is amazing.”

A Legacy of Hope

The Car 2 Home Project continues to embody resilience, compassion, and innovation. Through partnerships, community support, and a steadfast commitment to its mission, the project proves that even the most complex challenges can be met with hope and determination.

With its vision for growth and dedication to empowering lives, Car 2 Home remains a vital lifeline for individuals and families experiencing homelessness, lighting the way toward stability and a brighter future.
