CoastXP: Sustainable Adventure Tourism on Lake Macquarie’s Coastline

CoastXP is an adventure tourism company that offers immersive experiences along the beautiful coastline between Lake Macquarie and Newcastle. Their offerings include coastal sightseeing, whale watching (available from June to November), and guided bushwalking. Each adventure starts on CoastXP’s custom-built adventure boat, which takes visitors on a journey focused on marine life, local geology, Aboriginal and European heritage, and unique destination landmarks such as wrecks, islands, cliffs, sea caves, and ships.

Founded by Dominic May in 2018, CoastXP is a team of five wildlife guides providing small-group adventure-tourism experiences. Dominic, a former scuba-diving instructor and commercial skipper, has been exploring the east coast of Australia for years, including Heron Island, North Stradbroke Island, Lord Howe Island, Coffs Harbour, Port Stephens, and Sydney. Dominic began business planning after moving to Newcastle to study at the University of Newcastle.

“I began CoastXP to showcase the best parts of Lake Macquarie and Newcastle with locals and visitors alike,” said Dominic.

CoastXP’s dedication to responsible tourism and sustainable industry development is at the forefront of its mission, being the only local accredited quality and sustainable tourism operator in Lake Macquarie.

“We’re a licensed Eco Pass Operator with the NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service; we adhere to stringent environmental guidelines while conducting our activities inside NSW National Parks and ensure that our tours have minimal impact on the ecosystems and wildlife within these regions,” explained Dominic.”

CoastXP is preparing for future growth and expansion, with plans for new tours in the pipeline. These experiences are characterised by meticulous research and collaboration with geology, marine biology, history, and local Aboriginal community leaders.

Dominic offers words of wisdom to other companies considering entering the tourism industry in Lake Macquarie. He encourages differentiation, active participation in the industry, and support for one another.

“I’d love to see Lake Mac grow as a sustainable tourism destination with a wide variety of activities and experiences on offer to locals and visitors,” said Dominic.

However, Dominic emphasised that operators should focus on positively impacting the local community and the environment: “We need to provide opportunities and employment for local people, as well as protect the natural spaces we know and love.”

CoastXP’s influence extends internationally through partnerships with online travel agents and inbound tourism operators, amplifying the message of the region’s natural beauty on a global scale. Their dedication has earned them well-deserved recognition, including being finalists and winners of numerous awards.

Winning the Outstanding Visitor Experience – Tourism and Hospitality at the Lake Macquarie Business Excellence Awards in 2023 was a milestone for CoastXP. It validated their dedication and hard work and marked their presence on the destination-level stage. As a result, they’ve become finalists in the NSW Tourism Awards, representing Lake Macquarie on a state-level platform and solidifying their place among the best in the industry.

CoastXP is a testament to how a commitment to nature, community, and sustainability can create a thriving tourism business that’s as much about giving back as it is about exploring the local wonders. It’s a journey worth taking, one that showcases the true beauty of Lake Macquarie while having a positive impact on the planet.Â
